Signs the Shower Needs More Than a Regrout
Grout that keeps cracking in the same corners, a door that no longer seals, loose tiles near the floor, and a musty smell after every use all point to water getting past the surface. Once the pan or the backer board is wet, new grout only hides the problem.
Older homes show this most. Many West Anaheim tract homes built in the 1950s and 1960s still have mortar-bed pans and original valves, and in Anaheim Hills homes built mostly between the 1970s and the 1990s the fiberglass pans and surrounds are reaching the end of their life. Either way, we open the wall, find the source, and rebuild from the framing out.

Cement board and a continuous membrane on walls, niche, and bench.

Planning the New Shower
Size comes first. If the room allows it, a wider shower or a bench changes daily use more than any tile choice. Layout also sets cost: keeping the drain where it is keeps the price steady, while moving it means new rough-in and inspection.
Plumbing changes are licensed work. In California, a B-2 Residential Remodeling license does not cover substantial changes to major plumbing or electrical systems, so valve and drain changes are handled under the correct license class, and the finished shower meets the 2025 California Building Standards Code, in effect since January 1, 2026. Ventilation is the last piece. Anaheim has hot, dry summers and warm winters, and a hot shower in a closed room still loads the air with moisture. We check the exhaust fan and replace it when it cannot keep up.

How long does a shower rebuild take?
Most shower rebuilds take about one to two weeks, depending on tile choice and whether the drain moves. When a permit is required, the City of Anaheim Building Division inspects the rough-in before walls close, and we plan the schedule around that visit.
Does rebuilding a shower need a permit in Anaheim?
A like-for-like tile refresh usually does not. Replacing the valve, moving the drain, or changing framing usually does. We tell you which applies and file with the City of Anaheim Building Division when it is needed.
What does a new shower cost?
Cost depends on size, tile, glass, and whether plumbing moves. We give you a written price after seeing the room. California limits the deposit to a down payment of no more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, so you will not be asked for most of the money up front.
